The Theory Test

Get to know The Highway Code. It will give you the rules all road users need to know and a section on driving theory. There are many other books and multi-media CD-ROMs to help you learn the theory. If you need help to find the right one for you, then you can contact me, and I will point you in the right direction.

Candidates will have 40 minutes to answer 35 test questions.
The pass mark is 30 correct answers. The questions vary between,

  • straight text
  • text with graphics of road signs
  • text with photographs of road and driving scenarios

Most will require one option to be selected from a choice of four, some will ask for two, three or four correct options to be selected from a range of up to six possibilities.

Candidates taking the driving theory test select their answers by simply touching a computer screen instead of marking answers on a test paper. This "touch screen" system has been carefully designed to make sure it is easy to use.

The cost of the test and how it is organised

The theory test will cost £30. You must bring your provisional driving licence and some other acceptable proof of identity that bears your name, photograph and signature, such as a passport. Staff at the test centres will be on hand to help candidates who have any difficulties in using the new system.

  • The screens are easy to read.

  • Only one question will appear on the screen at one time, and you will be able to move backwards and forwards through the questions.

  • Candidates will also be able to go back to any questions, which they want to look at again, and can change any answers.

  • The system will also alert candidates if they have not completely answered a question.

  • The test questions will not change in any way.

  • All candidates should receive their test results before they leave the test centre.

Hazard Perception Test

Since 14 November 2002 the theory test has included a hazard perception test, which is made up of a selection of film clips showing real road scenes and possible hazards (dangers). You will be assessed on how soon you spot the developing hazards. This new test will form part of the current multiple choice theory test.

Please Take Note!

You must pass both elements to pass your test. If you fail either the existing multiple-choice section or the new hazard perception test you will fail the whole test.
